WhatsApp has introduced a new feature reminiscent of Discord, allowing users to engage in voice chats within group conversations.
Unlike regular voice calls, this feature functions more like ‘group calls,’ where initiating a voice chat sends a silent push notification instead of ringing everyone in the group. Users can join or leave the voice chat at their convenience, and call controls are conveniently located at the top of the group chat for multitasking.
Participants can view who joined the voice chat, while those not participating can see profiles in the chat header and Calls tab. Voice chats are limited to groups of 33 to 128 people and currently restricted to the primary device.
The end-to-end encryption ensures the security of voice chat content. To start a voice chat, tap the waveform icon in the group chat and select ‘Start Voice Chat.’
Ending the chat is as simple as tapping the ‘X’ icon in the top right corner. While initially available to a limited audience in August, WhatsApp is gradually rolling out this feature to all users, so it may take a few days before it appears on your device.
