One man is dead after Mounties responded to an alleged altercation between two injured people at a hospital in Hope.
B.C. RCMP said the incident started just before 11:45 a.m. Wednesday when officers responded to a two-vehicle collision on Highway 5 near the Zopkios off-ramp.
Multiple people were taken to hospital with non life-threatening injuries, including two injured people who got into an alleged altercation that resulted in paramedics requesting police assistance.
“Attending officers responded to the Fraser Canyon Hospital where an interaction occurred between the officers and one man resulting in one officer discharging their firearm,” said a statement from RCMP.
The man received immediate medical attention, but died at the hospital.
The Independent Investigations Office of B.C. has been notified of the police-involved fatal shooting.
It said the interaction occurred in the hospital’s emergency department, which has been temporarily shut down while IIO investigators do their work.
In a statement, the Fraser Health Authority says all patients, staff and medical personnel are physically safe and unharmed.
