Imagine the rhythmic Tabla beats, played by none other than Zakir Hussain himself, in sync with the sound of intense punches on a boxing bag, seconds after Phil Collin’s iconic “In the air tonight” fades away. It is wild, and inventive but not quite impossible in the world of the latest trailer of Dev Patel’s directorial debut, Monkey Man.
The second trailer ups the stakes as it delves into a solid back story, giving more context to the protagonist’s quest for vengeance against the corrupt leaders who murdered his mother. The nearly three-minute-long trailer of the action thriller is excellently cut, marrying exhilarating action with foot-tapping music. The film is already receiving international acclaim ahead of its April 5 release date.

According to the film’s official synopsis, Monkey Man stars Dev Patel as Kid, an anonymous young man who works at an underground fight club where, night after night, wearing a gorilla mask, he is beaten bloody by more popular fighters for cash.
“After years of suppressed rage, Kid discovers a way to infiltrate the enclave of the city’s sinister elite. As his childhood trauma boils over, his mysteriously scarred hands unleash an explosive campaign of retribution to settle the score with the men who took everything from him.”
Patel is credited for the film’s story and screenplay, which he co-wrote with Paul Angunawela and John Collee (Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World). Monkey Man also stars Sobhita Dhulipala, Sikandar Kher, Sharlto Copley, Pitobash, Vipin Sharma, Ashwini Kalsekar, Adithi Kalkunte, and Makarand Deshpande among others.
Though Monkey Man was initially launched as a Netflix project, its trailer, released in January, revealed that the project has been taken over by producer Jordan Peele, and will be released theatrically by Universal.
