The video that went viral a few months ago of a young black gymnast not being given a participation medal like the other girls at a gymnastics event in Dublin last year made Chisom Ugwueru’s heart sink. How is this still happening, she asked.
She had experiences of her own as a girl in sport which she calls “little stuff”. Medals she won that she never got. A Community Games plaque that was meant to have her name engraved on it for the two years she won it, but her name wasn’t put on it.
