Japanese shipping line Iino Kaiun Kaisha (Iino Lines) and J-Power have agreed to install Norsepower’s rotor sail on the 2016-built dedicated coal carrier

This is the first time ever that a Norsepower rotor sail has been installed on a dedicated coal carrier. The installation will take place in the third quarter of 2024.
The Norsepower rotor sail is a modernised version of the Flettner rotor. It uses the vessel’s electric power to rotate the cylinder-shaped rotors on the deck.
These rotating sails use the wind to generate powerful thrust, resulting in the reduction of fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by approximately 6-10% in combination with the navigation optimization system.
This is the second vessel for Iino Lines following a VLGC vessel to be equipped with the Norsepower sail. The company stated that it would continue to actively promote initiatives for clean marine transport services in order to become carbon neutral.
This is the second time that J-Power has installed a wind propulsion auxiliary system on a dedicated coal carrier. The first one was the installation of the Seawing’s automated kite system onboard the coal carrier Corona Citrus for K Line.
