Elon Musk’s xAI has expanded the reach of its generative AI-based chatbot, Grok AI, to India and 46 other countries, including Pakistan, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Singapore, Sri Lanka, and more. The announcement follows Musk-owned X (formerly Twitter) revealing last week that access to Grok is now being introduced to the company’s Premium+ subscribers in the US.
In line with the global rollout, access to Grok in India is exclusively reserved for X Premium+ subscribers, requiring a monthly payment of ₹1,300 or an annual subscription of ₹13,600.
In a November announcement, xAI highlighted Grok’s distinctive features, emphasizing its ability to “answer questions with a bit of wit” and its “rebellious streak.” The company underscored that, unlike other chatbots in the market, Grok has access to real-time information through data from X. Additionally, xAI mentioned Grok’s capability to address questions typically rejected by major AI chatbots.
Grok is built on xAI’s proprietary large language model (LLM) known as Grok-0, boasting 33 billion parameters. According to xAI, Grok-0’s performance surpasses that of ChatGPT, based on the GPT 3.5 language model (free version).
Soon after its introduction in the US, Grok found itself embroiled in multiple controversies. In one instance, when tasked with roasting Elon Musk, Grok, true to its promised ‘rebellious streak,’ humorously labeled Musk a ‘delicate flower.’ It also questioned Musk’s actions, including his obsession with ‘x’ and the swift changes made to the former Twitter platform following Musk’s acquisition last year.
Some users have noted a misalignment between Grok’s responses and Elon Musk’s political views. In response to concerns about Grok’s political leanings, Musk stated that his company is “taking immediate action to shift Grok closer to politically neutral.”
