An indignant opposition revived the demand for the resignation of the government in the Lok Sabha when it failed to spell out how it would deal with the militant Sikh leader Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale who has been inciting communal hatred. They accused the government of ignoring the strong sentiments expressed in the House demanding arrest of Bhindranwale.

There are faint signs that India and Pakistan have agreed to explore ways to de-escalate tensions that have marked their relations during the last few months. The Indian Ambassador in Pakistan, K D Sharma, arrived in Delhi. Even if Sharma’s visit to Delhi was a routine one, it cannot be without significance that he met the Pakistan Foreign Minister, Yakub Khan, last week.
Potential CIA leaks
The Intelligence Bureau and the Delhi Police have nabbed three senior retired defence officers on charges of supplying the CIA with defence secrets. The arrests are being kept secret because the External Affairs Ministry is in the process of examining the cases of the two diplomats of the US embassy with whom the arrested persons had contacts.
Lebanon conflict
At least eight American marines were killed and several injured when their base in Beirut came under artillery fire from Druze. Shia and other Lebanese militias opposed the presence of forces in their country. American warships stationed on the Lebanese coast subsequently shelled Syrian, Druze, Shia and other militias on mountains above Beirut.
