An 18-year-old is in hospital with serious injuries after an altercation between “armed men” in a UK city centre.
Armed officers reportedly sealed off a large part of Sheffield city centre after the men started fighting this afternoon.
South Yorkshire Police said the teenager had been taken to hospital for treatment and a firearm has been recovered from the scene.
People had seen a reported disturbance on Bank Street at 2.10pm, where it’s claimed individuals were carrying weapons. An armed unit is said to have responded.
Posting on X a South Yorkshire Police spokesperson said: “Armed officers are currently on scene in Sheffield City Centre following reports of an altercation between armed men.
“At 2:10pm we received a report of a disturbance on Bank Street. Armed officers attended and scenes are currently in place on Bank Street and High Street.”
The force later added: “A firearm has been recovered, and an 18-year-old man with serious injuries has been taken to hospital.
“We’re asking you to avoid the area if possible as enquiries continue.
“Anyone with information is asked to report quoting incident number 442 of 22 December 2023.”
Bank Street and the High Street is currently blocked, with a picture from the scene showing two police cars in front of a cordon – along with an officer manning it.
