X, formerly Twitter, releases long awaited ad revenue sharing program for creators

Why it matters: Back in February, Elon Musk told social media users that Twitter (now known as X) would begin sharing reply-thread ad revenue with ‘Blue’ verified creators. This week, X made good on Musk’s word and released its plan for ad revenue sharing with eligible users. Now creators from 115 countries can earn revenue based on the number of impressions they generate…as long as they pay the price of admission.

The plan, posted in X’s Help Center, outlines the program’s eligibility requirements as well as the activation, deactivation, and appeal processes for participating platform users. The program is X’s first step at providing qualified content creators with some form of retribution for their content and engagement generated on the platform.

Today is the day: Ads Revenue Sharing is now live for eligible creators globally.

Set up payouts from within Monetization to get paid for posting.

We want X to be the best place on the internet to earn a living as a creator and this is our first step in rewarding you for your…

– X (@X) July 28, 2023

According to the plan, eligible users must be X Blue subscribers or a verified organization, have a minimum of 15 million impressions on their cumulative posts within the last three months, have at least 500 followers, and have a Stripe account for payment processing. If those criteria are met, qualified users can sign up for the program under the platform’s settings and monetization sections.

In addition to meeting the eligibility requirements, qualified users must also adhere to all terms, rules, and standards or risk exclusion from the monetization program.

X also says it reserves the right to modify or cancel the program at any time for business, financial, or legal reasons as well as the right to accept or revoke user participation at its sole discretion for business, financial, or legal reasons. The plan includes a link for participants to review the Ads Revenue Program Terms, however we’re not sure what those terms actually are since the link dead ends at a picture of a poodle sitting in a chair.

Qualified users that opt into the new program and meet all criteria will receive regular payouts via their verified Stripe account whenever they’ve generated more than $50. In the event that a user’s account is flagged or paused due to account review or a breach of terms, users will have 30 days to appeal the action. Appeals must be sent directly to X support with any meaningful evidence supporting the account’s full restoration. Flagged users who do not appeal within 30 days of account action, or those who submit rejected appeals, will be ineligible to restart the ad sharing program.

According to X’s plan, the company wants “… the process to be as simple as possible, so all eligible X Blue and Verified Organizations subscribers are entitled to revenue share so long as they meet the eligibility criteria and join.” While the plan does not define how X determines the value of its payouts, previously paid users have reported receiving anywhere from several thousand dollars to upwards of $40,000 in ad-sharing rewards.
