A worker has been killed at the site of a major hospital expansion project in Newcastle.

New South Wales Ambulance paramedics attended and took the man to hospital in a critical condition, but he later died of his injuries.

“Police from Newcastle City Police District attended and established a crime scene which has been examined by specialist police,” said a NSW Police spokesperson.

SafeWork NSW and CFMEU representatives also attended the site and will conduct their own investigations, while police will prepare a report for the coroner.

Anyone with information for police is urged to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

NSW Health Minister Ryan Park issued a brief statement following the incident.

“I want to offer my deepest condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of the worker who tragically lost their life on the site of the John Hunter Hospital redevelopment,” it reads.

“This is distressing for everyone involved and support and counselling is available for workers, staff and their families during this difficult time.”

John Hunter Hospital is undergoing a $835m redevelopment, managed by Multiplex, due to be finished in 2026.
