When the building manager of a Cresent Heights apartment complex responded to a resident’s complaint about a “leak” from the suite above, he made a grisly discovery.
On Aug. 9, 2021, the manager entered unit 807 of the 6 Avenue N.E. building to discover the decomposing body of Calgarian Michael Donald Lloyd.

Juliana Bastine, 32, pleaded guilty in Calgary Court of King’s Bench to being an accessory after the fact to Lloyd’s Aug. 4, 2021 murder.
Crown prosecutor Donna Spaner produced a statement of agreed facts for Justice Alice Woolley, signed by Bastine and her lawyer Adriano Iovinelli.
At Iovinelli’s request, Woolley ordered Bastine to undergo a psychiatric assessment for mental health issues and for probation to prepare a presentence report in the case.
The testing by doctors at the Southern Alberta Forensic Psychiatry Centre will include a risk assessment at the request of Spaner.
According to the agreed facts, Lloyd had been out of town and told Bastine through texts that he would be returning on Aug. 4.
Unbeknownst to him, Bastine wished to end their relationship, and before he arrived at their residence she removed the batteries from the front door locking device, the court exhibit detailed.
In a statement Bastine gave to homicide Det. Dave Sweet, she said Lloyd broke into the apartment and once inside pushed her aside and went to the bedroom where he retrieved a hammer to fix the door he just damaged.

A male visitor to the apartment got into an altercation with Lloyd after he pushed Bastine a second time, she said, according to the court exhibit.
“She didn’t see any weapons. Then Lloyd took off his shirt and blood was spurting everywhere.”
She told police her boyfriend collapsed at the front door of the apartment.
Statement of agreed facts said ‘Bastine destroyed and concealed relevant and probative evidence’
Over the next several days, CCTV security footage captured Bastine leaving and returning to the apartment on multiple occasions, sometimes leaving with items.
“Bastine destroyed and concealed relevant and probative evidence in relation to the killing of Lloyd in an effort to aid (the killer) in escaping liability for the killing of Lloyd,” the agreed facts stated.
When police entered the suite they found Lloyd’s body had been moved and placed in a bathroom with a drape over the corpse.
A date for sentencing submissions before Woolley will be set once the lawyers confirm the reports are completed.
Bastien’s case is back in Court of King’s Bench on Nov. 24, to confirm a sentencing date.
