A woman in her 50s has died following a road traffic collision on the N17, Claremorris, Co Mayo.
Gardaí and emergency services remain at the scene at Ballindine, on the main N17 between Mayo and Galway.
Gardaí and emergency services were alerted shortly before 12 noon to the collision involving three cars on the N17 at Ballindine near Claremorris.
“One of the motorists, a female in her late 50s, sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene. She was removed to the mortuary at Castlebar Hospital, where a post-mortem examination will be arranged,” a garda spokesperson said.
The drivers of the other two cars were taken to hospital for assessment. Their injuries are not life threatening.
The road was examined by Garda Forensic Collision investigators, and the local Coroner has been notified.
The N17 stretch of road network passing Claremorris has been the scene of multiple tragedies in recent months.
In March, Una Bowden (47) from Moycullen, Co Galway and her two young daughters Ciara (14) and Saoirse (10) lost their lives.
Days later, a teenage boy, a pedestrian was also struck and killed.
Vikaris Gudaitis (17), was struck by a vehicle and killed in the townland of Barnacarroll.
All three tragedies occurred along a four kilometre stretch of road skirting the town of Claremorris, Co Mayo.
Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to this collision to come forward.
Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were traveling on the N17 at Ballindine at the time of the collision are asked to make this footage available to Gardaí.
