Wimbledon umpire scolds crowd for popping champagne bottle during match

But the popping of champagne corks mid-matches has not always been received so well by players.

Ahead of this year’s championships, Daria Kasatkina, the world number 11, said she finds the popping of corks unsettling during play.

“The tournament is the most classic tournament we have,” she said, adding: “The only disturbing fact of the matches is the popping of the champagne!”

The All England Lawn Tennis Club (AELTC) rules state that “all corked bottles, including bottles of champagne and sparkling wine, must be opened prior to being taken into the stands of any court”.

However, it appears to be a rule that is frequently broken by the tournament’s spectators.

In a third-round match between Benoît Paire and Jiří Veselý in 2019, the umpire was forced to play a let after two champagne corks flew through the air and landed on the court during a rally.

That same year, Novak Djokovic, the world number one, was also interrupted by a popping cork during a serve in a match against Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz, prompting the umpire to reprimand the crowd.

Gianluca Moscarella, the umpire, said: “Ladies and gentlemen, for both players, enjoy your champagne, but please don’t open it on the court please.”

Meanwhile, one fan narrowly avoided an eye injury in 2019 when he took his hand off a champagne cork and it flew into his face – which was fortunately protected by his sunglasses.

The incident was broadcast live on the big screen on Henman Hill, prompting gasps from the crowd, and followed by a slow-motion replay of the incident.
