The Afghan embassy in New Delhi has officially ceased its operations, citing several key reasons for its closure, while affirming its commitment to providing emergency consular services to Afghan nationals. The embassy’s closure comes as a result of the following factors:

Lack of Host Government Support: The embassy expressed its disappointment over the noticeable absence of essential support from the host government, which significantly impeded its ability to fulfill its duties effectively. The absence of this support created substantial challenges for the embassy.

Failure to Serve Afghanistan’s Interests: The embassy acknowledged its limitations in meeting the expectations and requirements necessary to serve the best interests of Afghanistan and its citizens. This shortfall was primarily attributed to the lack of diplomatic support in India and the absence of a legitimate functioning government in Kabul.

Reduction in Personnel and Resources: Unforeseen and unfortunate circumstances led to a significant reduction in both personnel and available resources, making it increasingly difficult to sustain operations. The insufficient support in critical areas, including visa renewals for diplomats and other forms of cooperation, generated frustration among the embassy’s team and hindered their ability to carry out routine duties effectively.

The closure of the Afghan embassy in New Delhi underscores the complex challenges faced by diplomatic missions under evolving geopolitical circumstances. Despite this closure, the embassy remains committed to assisting Afghan nationals, especially in emergencies. India’s stance on recognizing the Taliban government in Afghanistan aligns with the United Nations’ position, with ongoing efforts to safeguard the interests of Afghans residing, working, studying, and conducting business in the country.
