What To Do on the Garden Route when You’re just Passing Through ~ The Garden Route (roughly between Plettenberg Bay and Mossel Bay) has so much to see and do that travellers are spoilt for choice. Getting the most out of this stunning area would take weeks. But, if you’re just passing through, between Cape Town and the Eastern Cape, there are a few quick stops that don’t take long, but certainly are worth a pitstop.
When travelling from the Western Cape to the Eastern Cape, start your day in Mossel Bay. Enjoy a hot cuppa on the beachfront, where there are some stunning views of the Indian Ocean. From the beachfront, you can look up at the amazing Pinnacle Point Caves (if you have time, take a stroll up to see the amazing views from there).
Then, head past George and take a right down to Victoria Bay for an ice-cream and a quick walk on the short promenade. This is such a pretty beach – it’s just good for the soul.
Back on the road continue on your goal of What To Do on the Garden Route, drive through Wilderness, taking in some breath-taking ocean vistas from the road, and on to Knysna. Knysna’s famous for its lagoon (also visible from the road) and the Heads. From the N2 motorway, turn right onto George Rex Drive and drive straight to the Heads’ viewpoint. Look down at the wild, impressive waters as they enter through the two headlands into the lagoon. This is one of the world’s most dangerous boat entries.
Then, between Knysna and Plett (and its surrounds), there are several animal sanctuaries for wild cats, birds, elephants, monkeys, donkeys, and raptors. There are also some wine farms. If you have an hour to spare, visit any one of these. It’s well worth it.
When it’s time for lunch, there are beautiful restaurants right on the beaches in Plettenberg Bay.
A little further on, after the toll, Bloukrans Bridge is the world’s highest commercial bungy jump. From the restaurant, you can watch others jump and plan your return for an adrenalin rush of your own.
