In true Cape Town fashion, wine lovers enjoy a little escapade to a wine farm on a clear summer’s day, but now it’s winter time and while it might not be clear out, it doesn’t mean our drives out to the Winelands need to come to an end.
Here are some of the scenic, picturesque vineyards that are warm, cosy and most importantly in the winter months, enclosed.

De Grendel wine estate and restaurant
One of my all-time favourites is De Grendel in Durbanville. Just 20 minutes away from Cape Town’s city centre, the tasting room offers floor-to-ceiling glass doors that open up to a verdant view on a summer’s days and in winter they keep the chill out while maintaining the view of the lake and the glorious greenery.
Glen Carlou
Glen Carlou Vineyards can be found in Klapmuts, just 35 minutes from the city. The vineyard restaurant property is located smack-bang in the middle of an extensive and lush, blooming garden, even in winter. The best views can be enjoyed on the patio, but the indoor restaurant enjoys views of the garden and wine farm too.
Wildeberg Wines Damhuis Tasting Room
Wildeberg is a hidden gem among the many vineyards in the Franschhoek Valley. The views are mesmerizing, with a waterfall, just a stone’s throw away from the manor house. The Damhuis (dam house) is intimate and overlooks the dam and the working wine farm. The function venue is open for private events such as birthdays, weddings, end-of-year parties and private tastings.
