Amidst all the running around from morning to evening, we forget to think about the little joys in our life. We might play less with our pets or stress over work, relationship or kids. While you can always take out some time to do things that make you happy, you can also lean on Ayurveda to boost your mood. There are herbs for happiness that can help to reduce stress and uplift your mood. You can have them as herbal teas or supplements.

To find out the herbs that work, Health Shots reached out to Mumbai-based Ayurvedic expert Dr Geethi Varma.

Herbs for happiness

There are many herbs that are known for their potential to promote relaxation and uplift mood. Let us check them out!

1. Holy basil

Most of us know holy basil as Tulsi, a revered herb in Ayurvedic medicine. Dr Varma says that it is believed to possess adaptogenic properties that can help to reduce stress, uplift mood and promote mental clarity.

2. Ashwagandha

Ashwagandha has many benefits, and is an adaptogenic herb that is commonly used in Ayurvedic medicine to promote relaxation and reduce stress. It helps the body to adapt to stressors and has been shown to have anxiolytic properties, says the expert. That potentially helps to improve mood and overall well-being.

3. Brahmi

Brahmi is a herb that is used to support cognitive function and promote mental clarity. It is believed to reduce anxiety, improve memory and enhance overall brain health.

4. Jatamansi

Jatamansi has calming and grounding effects on the mind. It is traditionally used to alleviate stress, anxiety and promote relaxation.

5. Shatavari

Shatavari is a rejuvenating herb that is believed to balance emotions, reduce anxiety and promote a sense of well-being, says the expert.

Ways to use herbs for happiness

These herbs can be easily incorporated in your daily routine. Here’s how!

1. Capsules or supplements

Ayurvedic herbs are easily available in capsule or supplement form. This is quite a convenient way to consume the herbs, especially if you prefer a standardised dosage. Just follow the recommended dosage instructions that is given on the packaging or check with a doctor for guidance.

2. Herbal teas

The good thing is that many Ayurvedic herbs can be enjoyed as herbal teas. All you have to do is steep the herbs in hot water for a few minutes then strain and drink up.

3. Powdered form

Ayurvedic herbs are also found in powdered form, which you can add to foods and beverages. You can sprinkle the powdered herbs on your meals or mix them with healthy smoothies or stir them into warm milk, suggests Dr Varma.

4. Ayurvedic formulations

You can go for Ayurvedic formulations, such as churnas, oils and herbal blends. They often contain a combination of herbs that are specifically formulated for various purposes. But take them after checking with an Ayurvedic expert.

5. Herb-infused oils

Some Ayurvedic herbs are used to prepare herbal-infused oils, which can be applied topically. You can massage the oil onto your scalp or body.

Ayurvedic herbs are generally considered safe, but you should exercise caution or avoid specific herbs altogether. Certain herbs including ashwagandha, brahmi and jatamansi might have uterine-stimulating effects and should be avoided during pregnancy. And if you have allergies or sensitivities then also you should skip them.
