Top Indian wrestlers detained in protest demanding arrest of federation chief accused of sexual abuse

A number of of India’s high wrestlers, together with Olympic medallists Bajrang Punia and Sakshi Malik, had been detained by police on Sunday as they intensified their protest demanding the arrest of their federation chief over sexual harassment allegations.

The wrestlers initially hit the road in January demanding motion towards Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, who has denied allegations of sexually harassing a number of feminine athletes.

“They broke the barricades and did not observe police instructions,” senior Delhi Police officer Dependra Pathak informed native media.

“They broke the legislation, and that is why they had been detained.”

Malik, who gained the ladies’s 58 kg freestyle bronze on the 2016 Rio Olympics, shared images and video of the wrestlers being dragged away by the police.

“That is how our champions are being handled,” he tweeted.

“The world is watching us.”

Malik and Punia have threatened handy again their medals if no motion is taken towards the 66-year-old.

After their preliminary protest in January, Indian sports activities minister Anurag Singh Thakur requested the president of the federation to step apart and assist in finishing up the probe.

He additionally mentioned a committee can be set as much as examine the allegations and a report can be launched in 4 weeks.

Mr Singh continues to go the federation and no report has been launched within the months since.

He has denied the accusations and known as the protests “politically motivated” by the opposition Congress occasion.

The ladies have mentioned they are going to proceed protesting till Mr Singh is arrested.

The protests have grown over the month, with many members of opposition events and farmer unions taking over the wrestlers’ trigger.
