Shawnee Kish: Juno nominated firebrand Shawnee Kish is headlining the second annual For the Girls Music Festival Friday in the Backyard outdoor party cage, featuring live performances and DJ sets all glittery, bumpin’ night. Kish just loosed her delightfully colourful pop single Stella!, showing off her pipes and here-grown kickass attitude. Also on the stage are Sammy Loso, Kiarrah Ireland and Thug Shells, while DJs Callee and Jade Tang will keep those hips moving.

Animethon 2023: Celebrating 30 sparkling years, Animethon is back all weekend, celebrating anime and Japanese culture in its myriad forms! The star-studded voice actor guests include Brianna Knickerbocker, Sarah Williams, Xander Mobus and Ratana, while making music will be Demondice, Stereo Dive Foundation, Ai Furihata, Windrise Band and Pure Octane playing the formalwear (and cosplay) Tribute to Ghibli Ball Friday night. And as ever, the genre-milking comedy of The 404s Improv is back. Jordan Hart: “Seems history is written by hands holding bigger guns,” sings Jordan Hart on his new reconciliation song about the ugly legacy of residential schools — 215 and Counting (O Canada). Asking us to not forget the “children buried underneath,” Hart’s song riffs on the national anthem, gets to some awful truth, and yet has genuine hope for the future. The musician plays this and other songs Friday, while all streaming proceeds of 215 go to not-for-profit Powwow Times.
