It’s been one year since Pope Francis visited Alberta, but before that the last time a pope visited the province was 39 years ago. In 1984, Pope John Paul II visited Canada, which included stops in Edmonton, Yellowknife, Vancouver, Winnipeg, Ottawa, Midland, Ont., Toronto, Montreal, St. John’s, Moncton and Halifax. During the 1984 visit, foggy weather prevented the Pope from making a scheduled stop in Fort Simpson, Northwest Territories. He promised to find a way to visit that community in the future and he did so on Sept. 20, 1987.
