This man is the second arrest in the investigation. A man aged in his 30s, arrested on Monday morning also remains in Garda custody at this time.
Garda are continuing their investigation todays into the shocking incident in a quiet rural area and a post-mortem will be carried on the deceased who has been named locally as Gerard Kennelly who is believed to be in his 40’s.
The Kerryman has spoken to locals in the village who said they would have never expected anything like this to happen in such a quiet area.
The victim is well-known in the village and his parents both live in the area.
Cllr Robert Beasley said Gerard Kennelly is from a very respected and well-known family. He offered his condolences to the family.
“It’s devastating for the local population. They’re a hard-working family. I knew them all my life. They have always been associated with garages and cars and things like that. It’s just a very unfortunate situation.”
“I wouldn’t have known him personally but I just know from his family that he came from very well got people in the locality.”
“I know the family, I know the father. It’s very sad.”
Cllr Beasley said the community is shocked.
“It’s not something you expect out in the country. When you hear about things like this, you never expect it to happen on your own doorstep.
“I’d also like to offer my condolences to the family and to the entire community as well because they will be very shaken by this.”
Another local described him as ‘fellow with a heart of gold’. It is understood he has several siblings who live in Australia and who have had to learn of his tragic passing.
Officers from the Garda Technical bureau are carrying out searches around a private property and the local pub in the village of Knockanure this morning after a man was stabbed and died last night.
A murder investigation is now underway in North Kerry following the shocking incident that is now understood to have occurred in a private apartment.
The village is currently locked-down with no access for the public as gardaà conduct their enquiries. A scene has been cordoned off around a house and the local pub much of the garda focus on this area.
The man was stabbed several times during the incident in the quiet rural area where there is little or no crime.
Gardaà and emergency services were alerted at approximately 12.30am this morning regarding an alleged assault in the Knockanure village area. Upon arrival, a man aged in his 40s was discovered with fatal injuries.
He was pronounced deceased at the scene and his body has been removed to the mortuary at University Hospital Kerry for post mortem.
The local coroner has been informed and the services of the State Pathologist have been requested. The scene is currently being held for examination by the Garda Technical Bureau.
A man in his 30s has been arrested in connection with this incident and is currently detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984 at a garda station in the Kerry division.
A senior investigating officer has been appointed to lead the inquiry, and an incident room has been established at Listowel garda station.
Gardaà are appealing to the public for information in relation to this incident.
Any road users who were travelling in the vicinity of Knockanure village, which is located between Listowel and Moyvane, between midnight and 1am and may have camera footage (including dash cam) are asked to make this available.
