Celebrating Asian Veterans at the Heart of L.A.
In a significant move to enhance the public’s appreciation of Asian veterans and their contributions, the Asian Hall of Fame is set to present “Salute to Service” on March 2, 2024. This event, dedicated to honoring the service and legacy of Asian American, Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islander, and Native American veterans, will take place from 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. PST at the Biltmore Los Angeles, located at 501 S. Grand Avenue, Los Angeles.
Event Highlights and Recognitions
The evening promises a blend of solemn recognition and celebration, with a tribute concert to Johnny Cash, known for his support of veterans and unifying music. The event will also feature remarks by Major General (ret.) Antonio Taguba, founder and chair of the Trauma Advocacy Initiative, who emphasized the weakening effect of marginalizing these veterans on American society. Ren Hanami, Chair and Inductee, echoes this sentiment, supporting the initiative to bring attention to the veterans’ legacy.
In a special acknowledgment, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisor Kathryn Barger will honor Chinese American WWII veterans with the Congressional Gold Medal. Moreover, the event will see the presentation of the Asian Veterans Prize to The Filipino Veterans Recognition and Education Project, highlighting efforts to correct historical oversights such as the Rescission Act of 1946.
Adding to the event’s significance, Hiro Yamamoto, an inductee of the Asian Hall of Fame and member of Soundgarden, will introduce The Johnny Cash Tribute by James Garner. Garner’s band is celebrated for its performances at significant anniversaries of the Folsom State Prison concert, carrying forward Cash’s legacy of cultural unity and support for veterans.
Support for the Trauma Advocacy Initiative
Proceeds from the event, particularly the Asian Hall of Fame’s Charity Boutique, will benefit the Trauma Advocacy Initiative. This initiative has been instrumental in providing humanitarian aid across various global crises, including relief efforts in Israel, Maui, Turkey, Ukraine, and support for the Monterey Park community, along with distributing medical supplies during the pandemic.
A Call to Celebrate Legacy and Advance Equity
The Asian Hall of Fame, through events like “Salute to Service,” aims not only to transform public perception of Asian and Indigenous legacy but also to advance equity through its support for community grants, cultural literacy, workforce pathways, the Women Founders Fund, and trauma advocacy. With tickets available for purchase online, the event stands as a pivotal moment to honor the legacy and service of Asian veterans, promoting a more inclusive understanding and appreciation of their sacrifices and contributions to American society.
