The alliance is critical of Meta because of its refusal to negotiate compensation for Canadian news media in accordance with Bill C-18, which was adopted last June. In reaction to the law, Meta has announced it will no longer allow content from Canadian news organizations to be posted on its platforms.

FTQ president Magali Picard feels that Meta is engaging in blackmail and its policy is anti-democratic, depriving Canadian audiences of credible news content. Picard added that Meta is profiting from the presence of Canadian news content on its platforms while not paying a cent for its production.
The FTQ says its advertising boycott will also extend to Google if that search engine decides to follow Meta’s lead.
Numerous institutions including the federal and Quebec governments, have announced they will no longer advertise on Meta.
In 2021, Australia adopted a law similar to C-18 and faced a similar news blockade from Meta. However the online behemoth reached a compensation agreement with news organizations in that country. That agreement prevented the Australian legislation from being applied.
