A 22-year-old man has ended his life after allegedly killing a 17-year-old girl in Maharashtra’s Palghar district. Police said the girl was killed Friday when she was on her way back from college and that the suicide was reported early on Saturday.
Prabhakar Krushna Waghare stopped Archana Laxman Udar around 12.30 pm on Friday, when she was going to her ashramshala (hostel) at Mokhada with three female friends, according to the police.
“As he wanted to talk to her in private, the girl’s friends stepped aside. While the two were talking, Waghare took out a knife from his bag, stabbed her twice and escaped from the spot,” Senior Police Inspector Dhananjay Jagdale of the Mokhada police station said.
After the three girls called for help, locals gathered at the spot and Udar, a Class 12 student, was rushed to a hospital, where she died during treatment. Her parents live in a village in the interior areas of Palghar.
The police, who were informed of the incident, registered a murder case against Waghare, a resident of Tulyathapada in Mokhada.
“While we were looking for him, we came to know that he had ended his life,” added Jagdale. The police said the 22-year-old had dropped out of school after Class 7 and was working as a labourer on the outskirts of Mumbai. They have registered a case of accidental death in connection with Waghare’s suicide.
“The accused and the girl belong to the same community. Around a year ago, the family of the accused approached her family for marriage. However, as the girl was a minor, the family agreed to marry her off to him only after she turned 18,” a police officer said.

Later there were some quarrels between them and the girl’s family decided to get her married to another man, the police said, adding that Waghare came to know about this plan.
“We believe that he decided to kill her because of this and he came prepared to stab her. We have recovered the knife used in the crime,” said an officer.
The police said they would soon submit a summary report in court as the accused was dead.
