Hacking of Stalkware

In a shocking revelation, a notorious hacking group hacked a spying app called Let Me Spy (LMS), which was popularly used by parents to monitor their children. LMS is a stalkerware or spouseware app, which requires installation on the phone, generally done secretly by domestic partners. The call logs and text messages of the person being tracked are secretly uploaded to the servers by this app.

The hacking has put a lot of people in a vulnerable situation. It has raised serious concerns about privacy and how it is being compromised because of the use of similar monitoring tools used by employers to monitor and track their employees.

Implications for citizens

Of particular concern is the use of widely-used tools like Microsoft Outlook, which has become a staple in workplaces around the world. While Outlook primarily serves as an email client and personal information manager, it also possesses features that allow employers to monitor their employees’ email communication and other online activities.

This functionality, intended to enhance productivity and safeguard company resources, has raised ethical questions about the balance between employer surveillance and individual privacy. It can lead to a compromise of the research data of large corporations if hacked by someone. Knowledge in the wrong hands can be dangerous.

Employee monitoring tools have become increasingly prevalent in modern workplaces, as employers seek to ensure optimal performance, protect sensitive information, and detect potential security breaches. However, the Let Me Spy hacking incidents have highlighted the potential risks associated with such tools falling into the wrong hands or being exploited for malicious purposes.

Reported incidents of data privacy breach

In one of the reported incidents, an employee was not only tracked on the internet browsing for months after her resignation. The data was leaked to her co-worker, who happened to be her neighbor. It stripped her of all her privacy. These acts are leading to mental harassment and torture for employees of even Big 4 companies.

The cyber law in India protects the rights of citizens under section 43A of the IT Act 2000 (Compensation for failure to protect data), by making it mandatory for organizations to keep employee data private.

The aggrieved say that it is more important to be informed and protect oneself rather than file suits for corporate carelessness, which takes a long time to resolve. It is important to delete all official applications from phones after resignation or keep two separate phones when working with organizations that track employees.

Implications for Corporate

Critics argue that the use of employee monitoring tools can create an atmosphere of distrust and hinder employee morale. Furthermore, the possibility of unauthorized access or hacking, as demonstrated by Let Me Spy, raises concerns about the vulnerability of sensitive employee data and confidential company information such as research and development.

While organizations have the right to protect their assets and maintain a secure working environment, it is crucial to strike a balance between surveillance and employee privacy. Transparency and clear guidelines regarding the use of monitoring tools are essential to ensure ethical practices and safeguard individual rights.

Innovative employee development and engagement models are being developed for ensuring employee core development through values leading to enhanced productivity.

In response to the Let Me Spy hacking incidents, privacy advocates and industry experts are calling for greater transparency and oversight regarding the use of employee monitoring tools. Employers are encouraged to communicate openly with their staff, outlining the purpose, scope, and limitations of such tools to establish trust and minimize any perceived invasion of privacy.

As the Let Me Spy hacking incidents continue to unfold, the spotlight on employee monitoring tools, including popular applications like Outlook, grows brighter. Striking the delicate balance between employee privacy and organizational security will require careful consideration, robust security measures, and ongoing dialogue between employers, employees, and privacy advocates to ensure ethical practices in the digital workplace.
