Malala Yousafzai, the Nobel Peace Prize laureate, has pledged to donate $300,000 (approximately ₹2.5 crore) to support three charitable organizations aiding the Palestinian population. She expressed her deep distress over the recent bombing of al-Ahli Hospital in Gaza, which resulted in the tragic loss of nearly 500 lives. Malala emphasized the ineffectiveness of collective punishment and called for immediate action.
“I’m horrified to see the bombing of al-Ahli Hospital in Gaza and unequivocally condemn it,” Yousafzai said in a video message. “I urge the Israeli government to allow humanitarian aid into Gaza and reiterate the call for a ceasefire. I am directing $300K to three charities helping Palestinian people under attack.”
The devastating incident occurred when Gaza’s al-Ahli Arab Hospital, also known as the Baptist Hospital, was struck during the night, resulting in a high casualty count. While Palestinian officials attributed the explosion to Israeli airstrikes following their declaration of war against Hamas, Israel denied involvement, claiming that a misfired rocket from Islamic Jihad was responsible. The United States supported Israel’s stance based on available intelligence.
The situation has sparked controversy, with accusations of Israel trying to evade responsibility for the hospital’s tragic destruction and blaming the Islamic Jihad movement in Palestine. Islamic Jihad, the second-largest armed group in Gaza, was established in the 1980s within the Gaza Strip to resist the Israeli occupation. Although it occasionally operates independently from Hamas, reports suggest that both receive funding and weaponry from Iran.
The Gaza Strip remains under a comprehensive blockade imposed by Israel, enduring continuous airstrikes since the surprise attack by Hamas on October 7, resulting in the loss of approximately 1,400 lives. The retaliatory actions by Tel Aviv have led to over 2,500 Palestinian casualties. Israel has issued warnings for residents to evacuate the region in anticipation of an impending ground offensive. Concerns about the unfolding humanitarian crisis in Gaza and the potential for the conflict to escalate into a broader regional issue have been mounting globally.
