NITIE one step closer to become an IIM | Mumbai News

As the Lok Sabha on Friday passed the Indian Institute of Management (Amendment) Bill, the National Institute of Industrial Engineering (NITIE) is one step closer to becoming an Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Mumbai.Now, once the bill is passed in Rajya Sabha, NITIE’s status will be updated to an IIM. This will be 21st IIM in the country and a second in Maharashtra, after the IIM Nagpur which was first among the six new generation IIMs established by the Government of India in 2015.

“In July, the Union Cabinet approved the bill amending the IIM Act which also includes upgrading the status of NITIE as IIM Mumbai. Now, after the Lok Sabha approval, it will proceed to Rajya Sabha and finally to the President of India for the final formality. Soon after that work will begin toward rearranging academics to offer courses in line with IIM and other aspects,” said an official from NITIE.

Located in Mumbai’s Powai, on the banks of Vihar Lake, NITIE does have a picturesque campus spread across 63 acres of forested hilltop. En route to becoming IIM, different infrastructural projects were already in motion at the institute, from a couple of years. Projects such as new hostels, staff quarters and renovation of old classrooms and lecture halls, strengthening of the boundary wall and beautification of the campus among all were started with funding under the HEFA (Higher Education Funding Agency).
