BC Hydro blamed the outage on a substation fault, which happened just after 8 p.m. As of Wednesday morning, all power had been restored in Chilliwack and Abbotsford.
“Crews were able to quickly identify the issue last night and restore power to a large portion of the customers impacted were back on within an hour,” said Mora Scott, a spokesperson for B.C. Hydro.
The outage happened as the region was under a heat warning, with daytime temperatures in the mid 30s. However, the recent outage was not due to heat or the additional use of AC and fans, said Scott.
Earlier this week, B.C. Hydro said demand for electricity across B.C. set a new August record during the peak hours on Monday night.
B.C. Hydro says peak use customers hit 8,400 megawatts during the hottest evening of a province-wide heat wave that kicked in over the weekend as hundreds of thousands of people turning to air conditioning and fans to beat the heat.
