Republican Mike Johnson has been elected Speaker of the US House of Representatives.

The Louisiana Representative garnered 220 votes, ending three weeks of the position’s vacancy following the ousting of former Speaker Kevin McCarthy.

Mr Johnson was backed for the position by former president Donald Trump after serving as the vice chair of the House Republican Conference since 2021.

“Turmoil and violence have rocked the Middle East and Eastern Europe,” Mr Johnson said.

“The country demands strong leadership of this body, and we must not waver.

“The first bill that I’m going to bring to this floor in just a little while will be in support of our dear friend, Israel, and we’re overdue in getting that done.”
