Gale’s brother and sister, Nolan and Kayln, who are also firefighters, gave emotional tributes, calling their sister a motivated individual who was compassionate and empathetic.

“Devyn, you’re one of the best people I know. Although your humility would prevent me from ever saying it,” said Nolan Gale during the celebration of Gale’s life.

“You’re an inspiration and a hero.”

Kayln Gale made a tearful plea for everyone to remember how her sister and best friend died, and to not just accept wildfires worsening every year.

“You should be laughing…rest easy knowing we’ll never forget you,” said Kayln.

Earlier in the day, hundreds of people lined the street to pay respects to the 19-year-old Devyn, who was killed by a falling tree while battling a wildfire near Revelstoke last Thursday.

They joined a solemn procession on a hot, sunny day with members of the B.C. Wildfire Service, several B.C. fire departments, Mounties in uniform and bagpipers.

“She was all smiles and high fives,” said Stefan Hood, with the B.C. Wildfire Service.

His voice shaking, Hood described Gale as “immensely beautiful and full of life, a “Gale force” who loved her job and was always up for an adventure.

“I wonder if, like me, she planned her next camping trip based on the newly discovered landscape that unfolded before her with every flight to a fire. I wonder how many of those adventures remain planned and shelved, ready but never lived.”

Another B.C. Wildfire Service colleague, Casey Robinson, said Gale always welcomed new crew members with an open heart.

“When I met Devyn, she struck me as being thoughtfully reserved with a drive and a desire to learn,” he said. “She joined the crew and fit right in. She grew to a person that everyone wanted to work with.”

“She would tell everyone where they could find the gear, what they should have in their backpack and she would get them set up. So they were comfortable and they felt at home and they were ready to go,” said Robinson.

“We loved how you outworked all of us with a smile on your face.”

Gale was born at the Langley Memorial Hospital on Nov. 24, 2003, and leaves two grieving parents and her two siblings, said Gary Sulz, the mayor of Revelstoke. He described her as hardworking and a capable student.

He said that as a youth, Devyn’s interests included competitive swimming and skiing with her family. But her main passion was training and competing in trampoline gymnastics, with the Revelstoke Acrobats Trampoline Club.

Revelstoke Mayor Gary Sulz, who also acted as the funeral director, told attendees that Gale competed in swimming and skiing while growing up, and that her “main passion” was trampoline gymnastics.

“Devyn brought a lot of joy to her family, and her grit, integrity and passion to grow made it easy to find pride in her,” he said.

“Devyn also had a mischievous and goofy side full of pranks, wacky handshakes and bad singing that not everyone had the privilege to see,” he added.

Gale, who was also a nursing student at UBC Okanagan, is one of three Canadians killed during firefighting efforts as the country faces its potentially worst wildfire season on record. Ryan Gould, 41, died Wednesday when the helicopter he was piloting crashed northeast of Peace River, Alta., and Adam Yeadon, 25, died last Saturday while fighting a wildfire near his home in Fort Liard, N.W.T.

Revelstoke RCMP said Gale was working on brush-clearing in a remote area where a fire had started.

Mounties said her team lost contact with her before finding her pinned under a fallen tree. They immediately gave her first aid, but she succumbed to her injuries after being airlifted to a hospital in Revelstoke.

The Revelstoke RCMP said the death is now under investigation by police, the B.C. Coroners Service, WorkSafeBC and the B.C. Wildfire Service.

Firefighters continue to battle hundreds of out of control wildfires in the province. Earlier this week, the B.C. government said more than 13,900 square kilometres of land had been scorched, surpassing the record of 13,543 square kilometres burned, set in 2018.
