Mark Condren won first prize in the portrait category for his picture titled ‘Taking a Break’.
The image captured 97-year-old sculptor Imogen Stuart who fell asleep while getting her portrait taken at her studio in Dublin.
Mr Condren won the Multimedia award for his short film titled ‘Mooving’, which featured a Galway farmer moving his dry stock herd across a 100 metre wide stretch of the River Shannon.
Judges said the winning entry was “beautifully filmed” and “the most memorable story” in the category.
In the politics category, Mr Condren walked away with second prize for his picture taken during US President Joe Biden’s visit to Co Mayo.
Titled ‘Mayo for Joe!’, the judges said “a highlight of US President Biden’s visit is perfectly captured in this scene outside the cathedral in Ballina. The framing, timing and lighting of this scene are all perfect.”
In the same category, Mediahuis photographer Frank McGrath won third prize for his picture taken during the Sinn Féin Ard Fheis.
The image captured what the judges called “an emotional moment” on stage between Mary Lou McDonald and the Palestinian ambassador to Ireland Dr. Jilan Abdalmajid.
The event in the RDS in Dublin saw awards presented to photographers across 10 categories including news, reportage and sports action.
Alan Betson of The Irish Times was named the AIB Press Photographer of the Year 2024 at an awards ceremony, where Tánaiste Micheál Martin was the guest of honour.
“I want to congratulate all the winners of tonight’s awards. The skills and experience necessary to be able to capture and tell the truthful story of an event, a moment, an emotion in a single image, are truly invaluable,” Tánaiste Micheál Martin said.
“They are especially so in an increasingly unpredictable world with emerging AI capability, social media manipulation and aggressive misinformation and disinformation campaigns. Our society benefits enormously from this vital work,” the Tánaiste added.
Other winners on the night included Dara Mac Dónaill from The Irish Times who won first place in the Daily Life and People category and Sam Boal from rollingnews.ie, who scooped first place in the Reportage category for his image ‘Dublin’s Burning’.
All the winning and short-listed images can be viewed at the touring exhibition which will visit various venues across the country over the coming year.
