Gardaí are refusing to rule out foul play after a man who was discovered with serious head injuries on a Wexford street in the early hours of this Monday morning subsequently died in hospital.
The man, aged in his late 60s, was discovered by passers-by unconscious and bleeding heavily on George’s Street in the town centre at around 2am this morning. They immediately called for an ambulance and were required to give the man CPR on the footpath as his pulse became weaker and weaker.
Eventually, an ambulance arrived and paramedics administered medical attention to the man on the side of the street before he was rushed to Wexford General Hospital.
Sadly, a short time later he was pronounced dead. The man’s remains were set to be removed to University Hospital Waterford this morning for a full post mortem examination to be carried out.
Wexford gardaí cordoned off George’s Street for a time and a full technical examination of the scene was carried out.
A garda source confirmed that a full investigation into the matter is ongoing and nothing was being ruled out at this point. It is unclear whether the injuries were sustained during the course of an assault or whether the man simply lost his balance and fell.
“We just don’t know at the moment,” they said. “We’re not ruling anything out. We’ll be looking at CCTV footage this morning to see if we can get a better picture of what happened and we’ll be carrying out inquiries.
“Obviously, if anyone has any information in relation to this incident, we would ask them to get in touch with us at Wexford garda station on 053 9165200 or contact the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666111.”
