Alberta’s police watchdog are investigating after police shot and killed a man who was said to be carrying a weapon outside of a north Edmonton home Friday.
According to a Saturday news release, Edmonton police officers were assisting Edmonton Fire Rescue Services (EFRS) crews at around 9:51 p.m Friday at an apartment complex fire in the area of 116 Avenue and 124 Street.

Police said officers were initially called in to assist with traffic and crowd control when an officer was approached by nearby residents who reported a man with a firearm outside of a home on 123 Street and 116 Avenue. Police said the officer approached the rear of the home where they encountered the man armed with a weapon.
“A confrontation occurred and the officer discharged their firearm, striking the man,” police said.
EMS paramedics arrived to treat the man but he was declared dead on scene. No police officers were injured. Police said a firearm was located at the scene. Police did not provide any information on the identity of the victim.
The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) has been called in to investigate. ASIRT’s investigation will focus on the circumstances surrounding the officer-involved shooting and whether police conduct was lawful.
Firefighters respond to two-alarm blaze
Firefighters were initially responding to a fire at an apartment complex, at 11600 124 Street NW, on Friday evening.
The first call came in at 8:47 p.m., and crews were on the scene at 8:51 p.m., EFRS said in an email Saturday. The fire was classified as a second alarm fire, EFRS said, with eight crews, EMS and two district chiefs on the ground.
The fire was brought under control as of 9:41 p.m. Friday night.
No one was injured in the fire and the cause is under investigation.
