Environment Canada issued a special weather statement for Montreal on Thursday warning of a “major weather system” beginning Saturday that will include alternating incidents of rain and snow and continue over the weekend.
The statement, which also applies to the regions of Pontiac, the Laurentians, Haute-Mauricie, Abitibi-Témiscamingue, Eastern Townships, Centre-du-Québec and Bois-Francs, notes the precipitation is expected to begin on Saturday, initially as rain.

“The rain is expected to change over to snow overnight Saturday night and could continue into Monday. Significant rainfall amounts, and then snowfall amounts, are possible in several locations,” according to the statement, which does not estimate how much precipitation is expected. “It should also be noted that the accumulated snow could be heavy and sticky. This could add considerable weight to structures and trees, making them more vulnerable to breakage.”
Those in the affected areas are urged to re-consider any non-essential travel plans.
Thursday’s forecast for Montreal calls for cloudy skies in the morning that will clear in the afternoon and an expected high of 9 degrees C.
