Longtime sports commentator Yvon Pedneault has passed away at age 77.
TVA Sports reported he died overnight Friday at Charles-Lemoyne Hospital in palliative care. The network added he was diagnosed with cancer only a month ago.

“Yvon has been an important member of the big TVA Sports family since the very beginning of the channel (in 2011), the general manager of TVA Sports, Louis-Philippe Neveu, wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

“There are very few words to express the sadness we feel,” Neveu said. “Yvon will leave a very big void within the team. We wish to offer our deepest condolences to his family, friends and colleagues.”
Pedneault worked for nearly 60 years in the world of sports, particularly the National League hockey. He started out as a sports journalist, before continuing as an analyst.
“(He) has always known how to combine passion and professionalism in his profession, said the Montreal Canadiens organization in a press release. “His contagious energy and authenticity will be missed by all who had the chance to know him.”
Originally from Saguenay, Pedneault entered the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1998. He was also awarded the Elmer Ferguson Memorial Trophy by the Association of Professional Hockey Writers.
He has worked for TVA Sports, RDS, Radio-Canada, the Journal de Montréal and La Presse, among others. He began his career at Progrès-Dimanche in Chicoutimi in 1965.
“We are losing a monument to hockey and sports journalism,” Quebec Premier François Legault wrote on X. A real enthusiast, a man always in a good mood who had fun and amused us by describing the matches. Thank you for everything Yvon Pedneault.”
