Lidia Thorpe claims Liberal senator David Van sexually assaulted her.

Lidia Thorpe has accused Liberal senator David Van of sexually assaulting her in parliament. In extraordinary scenes, the Senator Van was left visibly distressed and shocked by the allegation, telling parliament “it’s merely not true”.

The uproar occurred whereas he was giving a speech reflecting on the dealing with of the Brittany Higgins textual content leaks.

However he was interrupted by Senator Thorpe who mentioned she wouldn’t be silenced.

Deputy Senate President Andrew McLachlan mentioned the feedback have been “inappropriate” and requested Ms Thorpe to withdraw them. Ms Thorpe declined to take action.

She then left the chamber and might be heard yelling.

After Senator Thorpe accused him of sexually assaulting her, Senator Van appeared shocked.

Former Nationals chief Barnaby Joyce urged Senator Thorpe to take any allegations to the police.
