Nostalgic items are experiencing a return to popularity. Beloved television shows are staging comebacks and classic movies are undergoing remakes, among other noteworthy trends.

But one person’s perception of something as ‘nostalgic’ could be another person’s junk, as discovered by JustJunk, a company that specializes in the removal of junk and unwanted materials/items from residential and commercial properties, and which often comes across collectibles that have found new value.

Here are just some of the most nostalgic items that the JustJunk team has encountered throughout recent years.

Sports collectiblesNo one glided on the ice quite like Gretzky. And his card, albeit not in perfect condition, evokes memories of a time when sports cards were highly sought-after collectibles.

Among other discoveries, the team stumbled upon a well-preserved Bobby Orr lunchbox and two Toronto Blue Jays World Series tickets from the 1993 World Series — one for game one and another for game six.

Additionally, a 1972 Toronto Sun newspaper souvenir edition commemorating Team Canada’s Summit Series victory was also recently discovered.

Old tech, new worlds

JustJunk teams have encountered a multitude of outdated technologies, some dating back several decades. These items include tube TVs, VCRs, VHS tapes and DVDs — even something as advanced as a smartphone can become obsolete within just a few years.

Other intriguing discoveries include of Madison Avenue switchboards, ’80s-era car phones, early personal computers and a ‘video phone’ harking back to the ’60s-’70s.

Music to your ears

The JustJunk teams regularly encounters an abundance of old vinyl records, spanning from the 1940s to the late 1980s — a particularly interesting tendency considering the resurgence of vinyl records in recent years.

Alongside these records, the crews have also come across cassette tapes and a growing collection of CDs, reflecting the evolving landscape of technology and the music industry as it transitions into the streaming era.

It’s worth highlighting that many of these items, if well-preserved by their owners, have the potential to be donated and enjoy a new life once more, says the company.

Old money

With the advent of new anti-counterfeiting measures, older currency is gradually being removed from circulation. But, on occasion, individuals hold onto these old bills and coins.

While the monetary value may not see significant increases, the historical value of currency collections provides a glimpse into the era when they were in use and, not to mention, can be quite eye-catching.

Star Wars memorabilia

Who can resist the allure of Star Wars? Last year, in Sault Ste. Marie, a JustJunk team stumbled upon a lightsaber. Additionally, a few years prior, they uncovered a set of collectible Star Wars glasses from the ‘80s.

The team also found a Princess Leia collectible that remained in pristine, unopened packaging. It truly seemed like the force was with our crews when they stumbled upon these items in such remarkable condition.
