Jet2 Airlines has cancelled all flights to Rhodes as devastating fires rip through the Greek island.

In a statement released this morning, the firm said it would cancel five flights due to depart for the island today, as firefighters tackle extreme blazes surging across tourist areas. 

The airline has pledged to fly its plans regardless as it assists in evacuation efforts for affected tourists. 

Several fights packed with Britons will depart the island, with customers expecting to arrive for their holidays receiving refunds. 

Jet2 said in a statement: “We have cancelled all flights and holidays that are due to depart to Rhodes today (five flights in total).”

“We will be contacting affected customers to update them, and to let them know that they will be provided with a full refund and the opportunity to rebook.

“We will fly those five aircraft to Rhodes with no customers onboard so that we can bring customers back to the UK on their scheduled flight.”

Rhodes is among many Greek islands profoundly affected by a recent heatwave in Europe, which has ignited a series of near-uncontrollable fires. 

Officials have evacuated approximately 19,000 people from isles affected by the surging flames, with 2,000 reportedly coming from Rhodes alone.

Firefighters have dubbed the recent fires, which have spread from the Rhodes centre to the island beaches, some of the most difficult they have ever tackled.

Authorities have evacuated people from four locations, including hotels and seaside resorts, with some buildings damaged as the fires approach populated areas.

The Government has promised to send assistance to holidaymaking Britons impacted by the fires. 

Matthew Lodge, the ambassador to Greece, said in a statement posted on social media that the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) would send a “rapid deployment team” to affected areas. 

He said: “Since the #wildfires situation deteriorated yesterday @ukingreece has been working with the Greek authorities, airlines and tour operators to support UK nationals on #Rhodes.”

“A rapid deployment team from @FCDOGovUK is on its way.”

Britons currently staying on Rhodes or awaiting evacuation have been advised to follow the advice of local authorities. 

Anyone experiencing “difficulty or distress” should contact civil protection directly on 112 and +4420 7008 5000 for consular assistance, Mr Lodge added.
