Chandrayaan-3 is set to conclude its operations in the next seven days.
One week has passed since the successful soft landing of the Indian Space Research Organisation’s Chandrayaan-3 mission on the Moon’s south pole. The third moon mission is set to end its operations in the next seven days. Since August 23, ISRO has confirmed the presence of sulphur and other elements like Al, Ca, Fe, Cr, Ti, Mn, Si, and O on the south pole of the Moon. The search of Hydrogen is underway and in-situ experiments on the moon are currently underway
The mission will come to an end due to the lunar night, a period when the surface of the moon is not exposed to the sun.
One lunar day is equal to approximately 14 Earth days during this event. The area gets dark during this period, rendering the solar-powered Pragyan rover inoperative.
The moon rotates once every 28 days on Earth, which causes the lunar night. The moon’s surface is exposed to the light for one-half of this time while remaining completely dark for the other. The pattern of daylight hours on Earth, which are longer in the summer and shorter in the winter due to the tilt of the Earth’s axis, is similar to this cycle.
Even though the mission is about to finish, Chandrayaan-3 has been a huge success for India. India is now the fourth nation to successfully land on the moon, proving the nation’s competence in both safe landing and wandering on the lunar surface.
