India secured their spot in the 2023 World Cup semifinals with an emphatic victory over Sri Lanka at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium on Thursday. As the sole undefeated team in the tournament, they currently lead the points table with 14 points from 7 matches.
India’s stunning triumph featured Mohammed Shami’s second five-wicket haul of the tournament, complemented by exceptional innings from Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, and Shreyas Iyer.
Shubman Gill (92), Virat Kohli (88), and Shreyas Iyer (82) played starring roles in India’s total of 357 for 8, setting a formidable target for Sri Lanka. In response, Sri Lanka’s captain, Kusal Mendis, led his team’s innings, but it was swiftly dismantled by a remarkable performance from India’s pace attack. Mohammed Shami was the standout performer, surpassing Zaheer Khan and Javagal Srinath to become India’s highest wicket-taker in ODI World Cups. He also equaled Mitchell Starc’s record for the most five-wicket hauls in World Cups. Impressively, Shami achieved this feat in just 14 matches, while Zaheer and Srinath had taken 44 wickets each in World Cups.
