“The Eaton Centre was the primary place I visited in Toronto” (illustration by Victor Kerlow)

I come from a household of entrepreneurs. My dad operates a transport firm in Nigeria, and my mom has labored as a baker and a retail retailer proprietor. I used to be all the time a inventive child. My brothers and I used to make sculptures out of gum; we known as them chewing gum males. As a teen, I obtained into music and style and used Photoshop to design cowl artwork for buddies’ albums.

I used to be 14 after I first thought of transferring to Canada. I had simply entered a personal British highschool in Lagos. A lot of the college students go to the U.Okay. for his or her A-levels, that are equal to the final two years of highschool. However I wished to attempt one thing new. I knew Canada’s arts scene wasn’t as developed as these within the U.S. or Europe, so I assumed it might be a superb place to introduce new concepts.

As luck would have it, Trinity School College was recruiting at my Lagos highschool. Trinity is a personal boarding faculty in Port Hope, about 100 kilometres east of Toronto. I used to be excited by the potential for journey. Canada is 10,000 kilometres from Nigeria. I assumed, What may very well be ready for me on the opposite aspect of the world?

It was September of 2017 after I arrived in Canada. I used to be 16 years previous. The Trinity campus was large, with plenty of lovely historic buildings. The varsity was crammed with worldwide college students from locations just like the Caribbean, France, India and Japan. That was thrilling.

READ: As a girl, I had no alternatives in Japan. My world opened up after I obtained to Canada.

I moved into the dorms, the place my roommate was a scholar from China named Stephen. We used to speak in our dorm room late at evening, sharing tales about our lives again house. There weren’t many Black college students, however I befriended just a few guys from Nigeria and Kenya. My closest good friend, a Russian scholar named Amir, lived throughout the corridor from me. We linked over our love of music, sneakers and streetwear.

I liked going to Toronto on weekends and holidays. The Eaton Centre was the primary place I visited. It appeared like the companies and merchandise in Canada have been extra experimental than those in Nigeria, and I liked the road artwork and skateboarding subcultures.

I obtained fairly homesick when winter got here. I missed the solar. I missed Saturdays with my household. We’d all the time get up and clear the home collectively. We’d have a meal—often white rice and rooster stew or egusi soup, product of pumpkin seeds and meat—then go play soccer within the park. We’ve a WhatsApp group chat, so I may message my household every time I missed them. I despatched them photos of my faculty actions or the primary time it snowed. And each weekend, we’d discuss on the cellphone for hours.

After Trinity, I enrolled in economics at Ryerson, now Toronto Metropolitan College. I moved to Toronto in September of 2019 and lived in a dorm close to campus. After a yr, I switched to OCAD College’s digital futures program, which is a mixture of arts, design and know-how. It was higher suited to my inventive pursuits.

I liked exploring new locations in Toronto. I keep in mind the primary time I went ice skating at Nathan Phillips Sq. at Christmastime. The Toronto signal was lit up and it was snowing. It was freezing, however my buddies and I took movies and had enjoyable. I additionally liked my first time at Nuit Blanche, which is a free out of doors nighttime artwork competition in Toronto. It was like fantasyland. Each nook of the town had artwork. I felt like a child, revelling in all of the lights and installations.

For my graduate venture, I designed a online game known as Black Future, set in futuristic Egypt. To develop the sport, I interviewed folks from the Black group in Toronto to study their experiences. Rising up in Africa, I wasn’t conscious of race, as a result of everybody regarded like me. In Toronto, I met Black Canadians who instructed me how they have been handled otherwise, like being adopted in shops. These conversations helped me notice that in Canada, I is also handled otherwise for being Black.

I now stay in Chinatown in a shared house with some buddies from OCAD U. I like going to the gaming arcades within the neighbourhood, and there are many locations to purchase tech devices. And it’s near Kensington Market. I like the bohemian way of life there. Everyone seems to be carefree. I am going procuring there infrequently. I like choosing up gadgets from the classic shops.

The folks listed below are open-minded. I’m all the time going to cultural occasions, like artwork and style reveals and concert events. There’s all the time one thing enjoyable taking place within the metropolis. I like immersing myself in several cultures and studying from them.
