The Bissell Centre took charge for the second sitting, from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., which provided Indigenous cuisine such as bannock and stew.
Hundreds, if not thousands, of attendees were expected. Organizers provided not just food, but also music and various activities to “not only fill bellies in the community, but also to celebrate the community they serve and appreciate the friendships and love that have grown.”
More than 3,000 people in the city are experiencing homelessness, according to the website of Homeward Trust Edmonton.
Though concern remains about winter accommodations, the city says it expects to have enough shelter space this winter for everyone known to be sleeping outside or already using shelters.
Nearly all of the 1,727 winter shelter beds funded in Edmonton should be open by Nov. 1, city managers told a council meeting last week.
