Hot end to August prompts extreme weather response in Edmonton

Services to help vulnerable Edmontonians manage hot conditions have been made available as temperatures are forecast to hover around 30 C early this week.

The city relaunched its extreme weather response as of 10 a.m. Sunday, and will keep it going until at least 11:59 p.m. Wednesday.

“During extreme heat conditions, the key health risks involve dehydration, heat exhaustion and heat stroke,” read a Sunday news release from the city. “The extreme heat response in Edmonton is focused on expanding access to water and cool indoor spaces for respite.

“Anyone needing a break from the heat may go to any open city facility or library. Available indoor space will vary depending on the size of the facility, but even facilities without enough indoor space to accommodate people will plan to provide bottled water.”

Environment Canada is forecasting high temperatures of 28 C on Sunday, 29 C on Monday, 32 C on Tuesday and 29 C on Wednesday. Air quality could also be a concern this week due to wildfire smoke. The Air Quality Health Index is projected to be at a four or five for the next couple of days, which ranks in the “moderate risk” category.

Peace officers will be carrying water bottles for those who need help staying cool and hydrated, and water bottle filling stations are available at 24 transit stations throughout the summer (until Sept. 30).

The city has also set up a number of water stations that are attached to fire hydrants. There are seven stations Downtown, eight in the north and northeast parts of the city, three in the south and three in the west end.

Edmontonians are also being asked to check in on older relatives, friends and neighbours, and make sure pets are not left inside parked vehicles.
