“Following assessment, the veterinarian made the humane decision to euthanize the horse,” said the Stampede.

The Stampede changed the race format to have fewer chuckwagons at a time for the 2021 Rangeland Derby after six horses died at the 2019 Stampede.

Animal rights groups have called out the competition — and other rodeo events — for animal cruelty in the past. Protesters gathered near Stampede Park on Saturday afternoon, hanging a sign that read “Rodeo Kills” from Scotsman’s Hill — visible from the rodeo grounds.

This is the first horse death noted at the 2023 Stampede. The 10-day rodeo comes to a close on Sunday.
