Héma-Québec needs more blood donations to meet increased demand

Héma Québec is seeking additional donations as the summer season increases demand for blood in the province’s hospitals.

The agency said Tuesday it must collect an additional 500 donations over the course of the next few weeks. All blood types are being sought, particularly O Rh positive and Rh negative.

Héma-Québec says the summer season usually sees a drop in the number of donations, although the need for blood remains crucial all year. Donors are urged to make an appointment if they are seeking to give blood, although the agency is ready to accept blood from those who drop in.

People who find they must cancel their appointment are asked to inform the agency, to free up the time for other potential donors.

Héma-Québec also organizes the collection of plasma, stem cells, cord blood, human tissue and breast milk.
