Heather Ostler never imagined a weight-loss journey would lead her to breaking records at a powerlifting world championship.
Early this month, Ms Ostler represented Australia at the Global Powerlifting Committee (GPC) event in Hungary — her first time competing overseas.
Competing against dozens of women in her category, she brought home the gold for the 115 kilogram deadlift, 90kg squat bench press, and 65kg bench press.
“I still get a smile on my face just thinking about it,” she said.
“Standing up on that podium was just incredible, it was surreal that I ended up there.
“It’s become part of the family [powerlifting], my kids will always be in the gym with me or cheering me on.”
Ms Ostler’s exploration of powerlifting began when health complications fuelled her desire to lose weight.
She first picked up the weights five years ago after being inspired by her trainer who was lifting competitively.
“I was very, very unhealthy and I knew I had to do something to change it,” she said.
“At the beginning, I only wanted to lose a couple of kilos to better my health.
“Now I’ve got the powerlifting bug and I can’t stop.”
A sport that knows no bounds
Ms Ostler’s strength training gym is an almost five-hour journey from her home in Narrandera, in southern New South Wales, to Dubbo.
But she says the hours spent in the car are worth it.
“I have my home gym but it doesn’t compare to when I’m there [in Dubbo] training with my coach and my team,” she said.
“I love it — I get to train with people from all different backgrounds.
“We have a 15-year-old girl and a 70-year-old woman competing — it’s a sport that goes beyond age or gender.”
Ms Ostler said she hoped to continue seeing diversity in the weight and powerlifting competitions.
“You might see a lot of men online in the sports but it’s a community for everyone,” she said.
“If there’s anyone out there that wants to give it a go, don’t hesitate.
“Just look up the nearest strength gym and rock up.”
