Haryana Violence: 50 Panchayats Issue Letters barring entry of Muslim Traders

In the wake of recent communal violence that claimed lives in Nuh and neighboring areas, more than 50 panchayats across three districts in Haryana have issued letters imposing entry bans on Muslim traders. These letters, signed by sarpanches, have a consistent content and also stipulate that Muslim residents within the villages must submit their documents to the police.

The letters, circulating across Rewari, Mahendergarh, and Jhajjar districts, have raised concerns about further exacerbating the tense situation. Responding to this development, the Narnaul sub-divisional magistrate (SDM) has instructed block offices to issue show-cause notices to all the panchayats involved.

In Hisar, a few panchayat members have issued an ultimatum to shops, demanding the termination of Muslim employees within two days, or else face a boycott.

Simultaneously, the Supreme Court has been approached regarding alleged “blatant hate speeches” advocating for violence against Muslims and their economic and social exclusion. The plea specifically highlights rallies in various states, including Haryana, where such speeches have been delivered.

Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, representing the plea, brought the issue before Chief Justice DY Chandrachud. He emphasized the gravity of the situation, citing an incident in Gurugram where a call was made to brand those employing Muslims as traitors.

The violent incidents that unfolded last week resulted in the death of six individuals, including home guards and a cleric. The turmoil began when a Vishva Hindu Parishad procession was attacked by mobs in Nuh and subsequently spread to Gurugram and nearby areas.

In response to the unrest, law enforcement has arrested 312 people and placed 106 others under preventive detention in connection with the communal clashes. A total of 142 FIRs have been registered in various districts, including Nuh, Gurugram, Faridabad, Palwal, Rewari, Panipat, and Bhiwani, according to Haryana Home Minister Anil Vij’s statement on Tuesday.

Given the ongoing tensions, the state government has extended the suspension of mobile internet and SMS services in the district until August 11, specifically in areas where conditions remain critical and tense. Additionally, prohibitory orders remain in effect for the affected regions, as authorities work to restore calm and stability.
