The spookiest holiday of the year is creeping closer. For those seeking a scare-fest, there are plenty of scary places in Metro Vancouver to get your fright on.

They run the gamut from tame, family-friendly attractions to seriously terrifying haunts. Some of the haunted happenings are private projects (let us know about the good ones in your ‘hood!) while others are big commercial attractions.

Whether you’re into tricks, treats or terrors, here’s a list of some places to check out as we count down toward Halloween:

Haunted Houses

• Fright Nights, 2901 E. Hastings Street, Vancouver | With eight scary haunted houses to choose from, you’ll get a lot of boos for your buck here. Check out its newest attraction, the Void. You can also tiptoe through a haunted doll factory, an abandoned military base, and Carn-Evil where evil clowns reign. And because this is the PNE, don’t miss the food, including green apple cotton candy and deep-fried Kit Kat bars decorated to look like zombie fingers. Dates: Oct. 6-8, 13-15, 18-22, 25-31. Admission: $30-57, includes access to haunted houses and rides. Date-specific tickets.

• Barclay Manor, 1447 Barclay Street, Vancouver | This Queen Anne style house originally constructed in 1890 is a natural setting for a haunted house. Operated by the West End Community Centre Association, the manor is transformed to a ghoulish mansion for Halloween. Allot 5 to 10 minutes to go through. Recommended for kids age 8 and up. Dates: Oct. 27-28. Admission: $4 per person or $12 for family of four.

• 2261 McBain Avenue, Vancouver | Owner and creator Shawn Stevens is setting up this spooktacular haunted house display for the third year, turning the double car park into a kid-friendly walk-through with animatronics and other scary things. Dates: Friday and Saturday evenings in October. Admission: Free.

• Burnaby Village Museum, 6501 Deer Lake Ave, Burnaby | Not a haunted house, but a 10-acre haunted village. Legends and fairy tales take centre stage with visual displays of the Indigenous tale of How Raven Stole the Moon, the Chinese legend of the Monkey King and the German fairy tale of Snow White. Circus performers and music add to the whimsical atmosphere. Costumes welcome. Dates: Oct. 19-22, 26-29. Admission: $10 adults, $5 for kids age two to 12 years old.

• 2986 Forestridge Place, Coquitlam | What started out as a few Halloween decorations in 2017 has grown to an eight-room haunted walk-through spanning the entirety of the family home’s driveway. It’s a labour of love (and blood and gore) for 23-year-old university student Macarthy Whyzel, who has spent hundreds of hours on custom builds and projects. Last year, more than 12,000 people visited the haunted house and raised about $2,000 for the Greater Vancouver Food Bank. This year, funds raised will go toward Backpack Buddies. Date: Ongoing until Oct. 31. Admission: By donation.

• Maan Farms, 790 McKenzie Road, Abbotsford | The Maan family-owned farm turns dark for Halloween with Haunted. This year’s theme: Agatha’s Witching Hour. There’s a corn maze transformed into a slaughterhouse; a multi-sensory “hooded haunt,” and an interactive “full-touch” haunt at the Homestead. Recover from the scare with treats like kettle corn, mini-doughnuts, and pumpkin pie. Dates: Select days until Oct. 31. Admission: Starts at $40 for a single attraction, depending on date and number of haunted houses. Optional fast passes and VIP packages available.

Other Halloween events

• Lost Souls of Gastown, Vancouver | Take a walk on Gastown’s cobblestone streets into the dark side of Vancouver’s earliest years. From a devastating fire, an unsolved murder mystery, and the tale of Gaoler’s Mews, this live performance tour by Forbidden Vancouver brings some of the city’s most gruesome history alive. Dates: Ongoing. Admission: $32 adults, $29 youth and seniors

• Spooktacular Halloween, Britannia Mine Museum, Squamish | The Cabinet of Curiosities has been unsealed, unleashing a family-friendly Halloween adventure. Join a “monster tracker” on an underground quest then visit the “terror lab” to explore a collection of real sea creatures. Don’t miss the live demos of exploding pumpkins. Dates: Oct. 14-15, 21-22, 28-29. Admission: $25 for adults and youth, $20 for ages 3-12.
