Greece has recorded one of many biggest-ever migrant tragedies, declaring three days of mourning after 18 individuals died and greater than 100 had been rescued after a fishing boat sunk off its coast.

The boat went down round 80km southwest of Pylos in southern Greece at 2:04 am on Wednesday.
Survivors have urged that an estimated 750 individuals had been on board and 100 kids within the maintain, the BBC reviews.
The boat was noticed early within the afternoon on Tuesday by the EU’s border company, Frontex, and instantly alerted Greek and Italian authorities.
Initially, contact was made with the fishing boat at 2 pm on Tuesday, and no request for assist was made, with the boat intent on crusing to Italy.
At round 1:40 am on Wednesday, somebody notified the Greek coastguard that the boat’s engine had malfunctioned.
Shortly afterwards, the boat capsised and took 15-20 minutes to sink. Robust winds hampered the search operation.
The emergency helpline for migrants, Alarm Telephone, commented that the coastguard was conscious the boat was in misery, including that the boat employees selected to proceed travelling to Italy due to Greece’s ‘horrible and systematic pushback practices’.
‘The case is for the EU to offer asylum, assist and security for these most in want. It’s not an issue of Greece, Italy or Cyprus… The EU should conclude on a strong migration coverage,’ Greek migration ministry official Yiorgos Michaelidis mentioned.
Greece is without doubt one of the fundamental routes into the EU for refugees and migrants, and that is the second time the Greek authorities have been criticised after video footage revealed the forceful expulsion of migrants set adrift at sea.
The survivors have been taken to Kalamata, the place they’re being handled in hospital, primarily for hypothermia.
