Federation CJA and the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs want authorization to hire off-duty police officers to guard Jewish schools and synagogues, they said in Sunday’s statement. The hiring of off-duty armed police officers is not permitted in Quebec but, considering the circumstances, the organizations are advocating for this to change, and have raised the issue with Mayor Valérie Plante and others.
They have also asked Prime Minister Justin Trudeau for an urgent meeting with federal intelligence and law enforcement officials to determine the threat level against the Jewish community and what measures can be put in place to ensure the safety of its institutions.
“We know the stress and anxiety being felt throughout our community — especially for our students and for those attending places of worship, for their families and the staff — and this has been communicated in the strongest terms in our meetings with elected officials and authorities,” the statement said.
